Danny Murphy holds a BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts. After several years of classical-based drawing and painting, Danny decided to make sculptures as an alternative outlet of artmaking. Danny feels that his current method of working is best suited for both his love of creating sculptural objects, as well as painting.
Danny Murphy's sculptures are made from Strathmore Bristol papers. He cuts, bends, and glues the three-dimensional forms together until the desired shape is formed. He uses acrylic washes to stain and varnish each piece, which gives the object a forced sense of light and shadow, as well as density. By making the forms look realistic, he is able to then transform the reality-based item whichever way he chooses, usually by adding unexpected elements onto the piece. Danny has recently experimented with other media such as clay, wood, and metal.
